    Downhole Sampling High Quality Samples in the Field Proserv specialises in bottom hole sampling which supports evaluation and appraisal of a reservoir. Samples are captured in the field, transferred to shipping cylinders, and transported to the laboratory where chemical and physical properties can be measured and determined. This process needs careful management throughout to ensure sample integrity, operator safety, and environmental and legal compliance. Once analysed, the samples provide data vital for the economic and technical evaluation of the reservoir.
    Downhole Sampling Tools and Equipment Proserv offers a range of downhole sampling tools and supporting equipment to capture fluid samples from within the well bore. This equipment can be used to capture reservoir samples during exploration or production stages and can also be used to help sample storage vessels during decommissioning of platforms and tanks. Bottom-hole sampling tools are available in standard or exotic materials for use in harsh environments and can also be supplied with non-reactive coatings if required. Positive Displacement and Single Phase Sampler The positive displacement sampler (PDS) allows for the capture and isolation of conventional downhole reservoir fluid samples. The single phase sampler (SPS) captures, isolates, and maintains the samples at a pressure above reservoir conditions, for analysis back at the laboratory. Sampler conveyance is run on slickline, wireline, coil tubing or pipe and is operated via traditional mechanical clock or third party acoustic triggers when run as part of a drill stem test string. Cylinders For the transportation of samples, a range of conventional or single phase piston cylinders can be supplied, 700 cc volume as standard with pressure ratings of 10,000 psi and 15,000 psi. Cylinders are supplied with transportation boxes for safe shipment complete with European PED, TPED, United States (DOT) & Transport Canada (TC) certification as required. Features and Benefits

    Field Services Proserv has extended our downhole sampling services to provide customers with sampling engineers to operate samplers in the field if required. Engineers can be mobilised from various locations worldwide and our clients benefit from the superior level of professionalism, technical ability, and performance provided.
    Training Training packages can be provided on the operation and servicing of the Proserv downhole sampling equipment, either at a Proserv location or at the customer's facility if required. Comprehensive training schools have been developed to ensure sampling engineers have the correct technical and practical skills to ensure successful operation of our equipment.
    Subsea Sampling Production Maximisation A key objective for any operator is ensuring production maximisation is achieved with as little upset as possible. Subsea sampling supports this by providing accurate, at source, production chemistry. Knowing the chemistry of fluids and solids inside the pipeline allows you to calibrate subsea multi-phase flow meters, assists in efforts to reduce production losses and supports the unrestricted flow of fluids from reservoir to refinery. At site, while maintaining flowline pressure & temperature, the PhaseCatcher multiphase sample system is ideal for supporting calibration / validation of multiphase flowmeters.

  • Manual Sampling Stations Manual sampling stations allow produced fluid to be safely sampled via purpose built portable trolleys or fixed panels. Samples can be collected into appropriate transportation cylinders where required. e.g. flare, fuel, export gas, separator liquid, produced water, export pipeline fluids. ProMix Homogenisation / Conditioning Systems For allocation transfer purposes, water in oil analysis is a very critical parameter to be measured. The Proserv ProMix conditioning systems are designed for mixing/homogenising hydrocarbon samples which have been collected over a long period of time prior to analysis e.g. water in oil. A sample taken at any sample point into a ProMix cylinder may be stored, or brought directly to the laboratory for immediate homogenising and analysis. The system allows the contents of the sample cylinder to be mixed at the sample collection line pressure thus ensuring analysis sub sample representivity and retention of light ends. Mini – Separator Sampling Systems Proserv’s mini-separator systems allow you to safely and consistently sample wellhead and flowlines upstream of 1st stage separator for water chemistry, sand / solids and hydrocarbon composition. Closed loop systems ensure the operator is not exposed to toxic and flammable gases where previously samples would have been taken into fixed volume open top containers.

  • Sand and Solids Sampling Systems When hydrocarbons are produced from unconsolidated reservoirs, sand production can lead to erosion and blockages in flowlines and other production equipment. Sand management techniques allow the operator to maximise and maintain production while managing sand at acceptable rates and maintaining the integrity of their assets. Proserv can design, manufacture and supply a range of tools and equipment to monitor and quantify the level of sand being produced at given production conditions. The Response Proserv’s in house manufacturing, assembly and hydrotesting capability was utilised along with our stock of raw material to react quickly to the customers project schedule and allow manufacture of a standard severe service cylinder model to commence straight after contract award. The Result Certified piston sample cylinders were delivered in batches to meet customers well testing schedule. Cylinders were Department for Transport USA (DOT) certified for transportation of oilfield hydrocarbon samples as well as SilcoNert 2000 inert coated to reduce absorption of low level H2S resulting in more accurate sample analysis. Cylinders were manufactured from Inconel 725 NACE compliant material suitable for severe service applications.

    ‘The sampling stage is critical in understanding exactly what is being produced’ Case Study: Subsea Sampling The Challenge Safely and effectively capture multiphase fluids from the Subsea production infrastructure in water depths of up to 2,200m. The samples were need to support calibration and validation of the subsea Multiphase Flowmeters and monitoring scale squeeze returns through the provision of individual well samples for production chemistry analysis. The Response A team of technical specialists at Proserv developed the Wired-To-Seabed system which would allow for large sample and slop volumes to be taken. Meeting various industry specifications, for example NACE, NORSOK, DNV, API , the system was also designed to safely meeting the harsh environments that could be expected including 2,500m water depth, 510 bar absolute, and 88 Deg C. The Result A large volume system was developed that could captures up to 24 Litres of Slops and 24 Litres of sample fluids. Its benefits include:

    ‘The use of the Mini-Separator System… enhances safety, saves time and improves on current market products’ Case Study: Topside Sampling The Challenge Simplifying the process of sampling water, oil, gas and solids – and reducing risks to people, the environment and offshore assets. The established methods for sampling on assets pose several issues, ranging from the potential release of gas to the deployment of multiple containers, and the need for operators to use breathing apparatus. The Response A team of technical specialists at Proserv developed the Mini-Separator system as a new sampling solution which addresses these operational issues. Built to meet NACE standards, the system is designed to separate fluids and capture sand/solids as well as sample oil, water and gas. It can also ‘see’ the liquid split with its Guided Wave Radar (GWR) level device. This prevents the need for time-consuming lab work, separating out fluids and equipment cleaning processes. The GWR is the centre-piece innovation of the system, applying advanced technology to elevate performance in this specialist area. The Result The use of the Mini-Separator system, instead of an atmospheric container, for sampling at risers and wellheads, enhances safety, saves time and improves on current market products. Its benefits include:

    'Multiphase sampling to resolve production restriction' Case Study: Multiphase Sampling Client UK North Sea Oil Company Equipment PhaseCatcher Multiphase Sampling Solution Project Background A UK North Sea Oil Company was facing significant production and reservoir management restrictions due to an unclarified liquid loading issue. Existing infrastructure constraints, pipeline operating parameters, and limitations at the receiving terminal meant production was severely restricted until the exact composition of the downhole liquids could be confirmed and treated accordingly. The Challenge Conventional sampling methods were impossible due to a combination of factors, including high sample pressure (approx. 100 bar), a high Gas-Oil Ratio (GOR), limitations on hydrocarbon venting, and non-ideal sample point locations. The key operational challenge was the uncertainty surrounding the liquid’s source: was it high-value hydrocarbon condensate, or low-value water (formation, condensed or seawater)? The Solution Proserv was engaged to deploy its patented PhaseCatcher technology. The 2 litre NACE PhaseCatcher, a mobile multiphase sampling unit, was used to capture representative fluid from the challenging 12 o’clock position on a multiphase flowline downstream of the production choke. The PhaseCatcher system’s design addressed the core challenges:
  • Phase Identification: Equipped with Guided Wave Radar Technology, it provided immediate, high-confidence determination of individual phase levels and volumes, confirming a sufficient liquid sample had been collected for analysis.
  • Closed-Loop Safety: A backpressure floating piston cylinder maintained initial sample pressure and uniquely allowed for the displacement of excess fluids (gas and/or liquid) back to the process. This ensured a closed-loop sampling approach, eliminating the need for venting and drastically minimising operator exposure to hazardous fluids while enabling collection at either flowline or atmospheric conditions.
  • The Result The initial sampling campaign delivered a crucial breakthrough:
  • Well 1 Success: A critical, small volume of liquid was successfully captured and identified as hydrocarbon condensate. This finding clarified the operational picture for the first well, allowing the Operator to confidently adjust their liquid management and production strategy.
  • Path Forward: While time limits imposed by the Normally Unmanned Installation (NUI) restricted the sample volume from the second well, the successful execution of the sampling process has led the Operator to immediately begin planning a Phase II campaign to revisit the NUI and complete the full liquid composition analysis.
  • Proserv’s PhaseCatcher successfully enabled safe, regulatory-compliant, high-pressure sampling, providing the operator with the essential data required to de-risk production decisions.

    'Field trial for closed-loop multiphase sampling' Case Study: PhaseCatcher Field Trial Company National Operator Equipment PhaseCatcher Multiphase Sampling Solution Project Background Recently, the patent granted Proserv PhaseCatcher System was approved for use through the TTR Initiation Approval Process, TR-2024-0018 Part 1. This allowed Proserv to proceed to field trial with its portable, Multi-Phase Closed-Loop sampling technology to safely demonstrate the capture of non-pressurised liquids from the flowline without releasing toxic fluids to atmosphere. The Challenge The client required a solution for collecting liquid samples from onshore producer wells. Samples needed to be depressurised to atmospheric pressure for lab transfer, without releasing any hydrocarbons/gas into the atmosphere. Additionally, the system had to be H2S resistant. The Solution Proserv deployed the 4-litre Inconel PhaseCatcher sampling unit, connecting to the 3 o’clock position on a multiphase flowline downstream of the choke. The system incorporated:
  • A backpressure floating piston cylinder to maintain sample pressure and enable fluid displacement
  • 3 sub-sample ports for phase extraction into a secondary piston cylinder
  • Guided Wave Radar (GWR) technology to identify individual phase volumes of gas, oil, and water
  • Using PVT laws, the gas sample was depressurised by doubling its volume in a secondary cylinder, then displaced back to the process using piston technology.   • Rig up and connect PhaseCatcher as per procedure
  • Perform sample inlet pressure test using N2 and observe system integrity
  • Flush sample lines to ensure clean, representative sample
  • Fill PhaseCatcher with sample; observe phase separation via GWR
  • Use secondary cylinder to degas sample to atmospheric pressure
  • Collect depressurised liquid at NV12; repeat if needed
  • Return remaining sample to process and purge with N2
  • Rig down equipment and restore site cleanliness
