Shell Princess – Open Communications Hub Retrofit Project Background With a step-out distance of 6 km and water depth of 1200 m, Shell required communication from an existing topside system to the subsea system via power-line communication, co-existing with FMC KOS 150 SCMs. The key requirement was to optimise performance while ensuring a 20-year design life. Solution Proserv delivered a retrofit Open Communications Hub (OCH) solution to provide co-exist high-speed communications on the power line with existing SCMs. This enabled the conversion of AC high-voltage to DC, with full subsea power management to all instruments.     CNR Toni – Additional Wells Proserv’s Solution Proserv deployed its Open Communications Hub (OCH) alongside two of its latest generation Subsea Control Modules (SCMs) to deliver a flexible and future-ready upgrade. The OCH provided seamless integration with the existing subsea architecture, while the SCMs introduced enhanced functionality and reliability. Importantly, the existing topology—featuring separate communications and power—enabled Proserv’s system to co-exist with the incumbent infrastructure.     Woodside Shenzi Proserv, in collaboration with Trendsetter Engineering, supplied and commissioned the high-integrity pressure protection system (HIPPS) alongside field-proven subsea controls to support Woodside’s Shenzi North tie-back project. This involved deploying Proserv field service engineers and technicians offshore in the Gulf of Mexico to install, integrate, and bring online SIL-3 protected subsea modules on two new wells connected to the existing Shenzi platform. Deployment & commissioning offshore Proserv’s technicians were embedded with Woodside’s commissioning team to install and test HIPPS modules and umbilical connections. Umbilical monitoring and testing Their field support team performed pre- and post-installation testing (pressure checks, electrical resistance) to ensure integrity during subsea operations.     Shell Arran Project Background Proserv have supplied a complete subsea control system to Shell to accommodate 5 subsea wells. These wells are spread in to 3 separate locations tied in to 3 subsea manifolds (Tie in structures). These wells are separated into the initial single well. This well is the Columbus well (COL) which is tied in to the Columbus Tie In Structure following from a 37.4Km step out from the Shearwater Platform. From the Columbus Tie In Structure there is an additional step out of 14.3Km to the Arran South field. This comprises of Arran South Tie In Structure and 2 additional wells named AS2 and AS3. Proserv subsea service team played a pivotal hands-on role in bringing the system online: Site Integration Testing Conducted comprehensive integration tests to verify mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical compatibility across all tie-in structures and control modules. Umbilical Communication Checks Ensured seamless communication systems, using both fibre and Proserv’s high-speed copper powerline technology for redundancy and robustness. Installation & Commissioning Deployed and commissioned all hardware including SCMs, OCHs, SDUs, and HPU across the three field locations.

    Case Study: SCM Recovery Project Background In 2023, a Dril-Quip Subsea Control Module (SCM) from the Catcher Field’s CI1 location was recovered following reports of a hydraulic fluid leak. The intervention confirmed that hydraulic fluid was leaking from the gas end valve assembly of one of the three low-pressure (LP) accumulators installed on the SCM. The faulty SCM was returned to Proserv’s Great Yarmouth facility for detailed inspection and root cause analysis. Findings
  • The gas end valve was fabricated from low-grade stainless steel (SS 304), which is not corrosion-resistant in subsea environments
  • The component was not connected to the SCM’s cathodic protection system, leaving it vulnerable to galvanic corrosion
  • Corrosion was confirmed as the likely failure mechanism
  • The associated accumulator bladder was also found to be damaged; however, it remains unclear whether this failure preceded or resulted from the gas end valve issue
  • Corrective Action Plan Upon identifying the issue, Harbour Energy initiated a campaign to recover and upgrade all 24 SCMs in the field. The key upgrades include:
  • Replacing the LP accumulator gas end valve assemblies with corrosion-resistant SS 316 components
  • Installing earth bonding to ensure future protection via cathodic protection
  • Refurbishing two SCMs (Unit 10 and 14) at Proserv’s Great Yarmouth facility to serve as operational spares
  • Scope of Work - Onshore (Proserv Great Yarmouth)
  • Development of new test procedures and engineering drawings
  • Load testing and replacement of affected components, including:
    • Gas end valve assemblies
    • LP accumulators
    • Filter assemblies
  • Removal of all calcifications from anodes to prevent system contamination
  • Cleaning of all accessible external stainless steel components
  • Assembly of upgraded SCM housing and completion of all required testing

  • 12 out of 14 SCMs (86%) recovered exhibited significant corrosion of the LP accumulator pre-charge components
  • SCM 18 (BP3) was quarantined after an unsuccessful recovery attempt by vessel contractor, where it fell to the seabed. It was replaced offshore by SCM 10
  • SCM 22 was recovered and found to have a pre-fitted earth strap. Dril-Quip confirmed that SCMs 22 and 20 had previously been upgraded to the latest revision
  • SCM 11 was upgraded onshore at Proserv to the latest specification
  • SCM 19 (CP4) was successfully retrieved and returned onshore for rework. It was replaced offshore by SCM 14
  • Conclusion The campaign has effectively identified and mitigated a systemic corrosion risk to subsea infrastructure caused by suboptimal material selection and insufficient cathodic protection. The proactive retrofit program significantly enhances system integrity and operational reliability across the Catcher field.

    CASE STUDY: MCS Preventative Maintenance Routine Project Background Proserv has a longstanding relationship with the Forties Alpha platform, having supplied two Master Control Stations (MCS): the Bacchus MCS in 2011 and the Aviat MCS in 2015. Both units are vital to the platform’s control of its subsea or tied-back wells during gas lift or tree valve sequencing and performance monitoring. Proserv was engaged to carry out a Preventative Maintenance Review (PMR) under live operating conditions.

    The challenge was clear: complete essential maintenance activities without disrupting production. A maintenance strategy and detailed set of procedures were developed to ensure safe and effective delivery.
    Why Proserv? Proserv was the natural partner for this work, having designed and installed the original MCS units. Our intimate knowledge of the systems, combined with a responsive, safety-focused project team, allowed us to deliver with precision under strict operational constraints.

    Our engineering teams’ expertise across both hardware and software ensured effective planning and execution, minimising risk and maximising efficiency while maintaining full production.
    Scope of Work As part of the PMR, Proserv performed a series of detailed inspections and remediation, including:
  • Visual inspection of both MCS units and internal components

  • Verification of AC and DC voltages and current levels
  • Examination of Protective Earth (PE) and Instrument Earth (IE) systems
  • Monitoring and verification of Line insulation resistance on channels A and B
  • Inspection of cooling fan performance and filter element condition

Over many years, Proserv’s Great Yarmouth facility has become a long-standing engineering and equipment partner to Apache in the North Sea.
