Open Communications HubRobust communications for subsea monitoringProserv’s direct hydraulic and multiplexed production subsea control systems provide the control and shutdown of subsea wells together with robust communications that enable the topside management and subsea monitoring. The Proserv open communication hub (OCH) does something unique in subsea operations, it simplifies. It enables fully transparent communications and provides high-speed data monitoring from the subsea multiphase flow meters and control modules. The OCH is part of an entire system that reduces the complexity of connecting seemingly disparate systems and provides an interface for up to six instruments using only one pair of subsea umbilical power cables for data transmission. The OCH works with all major trees and control systems to create a transparent communication system. The Proserv OCH provides a flexible communication, power distribution and integration solution for both green and brownfield systems alike. Combined with a flexible range of mounting options the OCH can be readily retrofitted into existing subsea systems. For brownfields retrofitting new instrumentation or providing a field extension to an existing installation has always been a difficult process, until now. Incorporating the Proserv open communications controller (OCC/OCX) technologies enables all the benefits of separate or coexist powerline communications to deliver fully transparent communications for subsea controls and instrumentation. The OCH uses Proserv’s OCC/OCX powerline communications technologies to support high-speed data control and monitoring integration, for example subsea multiphase flow meters and control modules. Additionally, the powerline communications may be combined with fibre optic communications to provide hybrid solutions. The OCH works with all major trees and control systems to create a transparent communication system.Applications include

BROWNFIELD UPGRADE: VALVE CONTROL MODULEProject backgroundOur client was looking for a solution that would provide a contingency against the potential impact of an umbilical losing both power and signal. The client was concerned that its existing solution would not be adequate in scenarios where umbilical failure would affect the ability to continue production remotely.
Proserv was engaged to manufacture an ROV operated backup VCM that would directly interface with existing infrastructure. Proserv’s backup control module would allow for mechanical control of the Christmas tree, without any need for power or signal. This mitigated the impact of an umbilical failure and providing insurance against loss of production.
Chosen for our responsivenessProserv was primarily chosen for this project due to lead time capability. This is because we were able to deliver inside a tight schedule of 12 months. The OEM could not provide an answer within the window the client required. They were also unenthusiastic in its support for a solution. Proserv had the expertise to design a solution that could interface with equipment already installed subsea, working in tandem, or ‘co-existing’, with those assets in situ. Our proposal offered a real alternative to the suggestion from the OEM.Reverse engineering the solutionCreating the VCM involved the design, manufacture and qualification of a new hydraulic coupler that could interact with the existing OEM’s hydraulic couplers already subsea. Developing this solution required our engineers to problem solve a number of issues. This included having to reverse engineer several key components needed to make the VCM work. This entailed the use of 3D scanning, which is a new technology for Proserv. This is a fantastic development for us, as our experience of using this will improve our augmented controls technology, or ACT, capabilities for the future.Supporting the futureThere are several thousand OEM hydraulic couplers in existence, owned by operators all over the world. Now Proserv has proven we have the capability to produce an alternative to the legacy product. With this expertise, Proserv can now assist those operators with both mechanical and electrical support, which opens up numerous potential future opportunities. Our modules provide the requisite monitoring, control and shutdown functions for subsea production wells, HIPPS skids, injection wells, manifolds, pipeline end manifolds (PLEMs), and work-over controls. To date, Proserv has manufactured and supplied over 300 subsea control modules to clients globally.
GREENFIELD SOLUTION: SUBSEA PRODUCTION CONTROLSBackgroundThe client required a subsea production control system for their project in the Gulf of Mexico, located in water depths between 3,300 and 3,700 feet. Subsea control and monitoring was required to be capable of controlling 19 subsea wells and manifolds across two independent umbilicals. Latest industry specification subsea instrumentation was used with high functionality control for production, water injection trees and down hole multi-zone smart sliding sleeves.ScopeWork for the project was carried out at various Proserv subsea service centres and technology hubs around the world. The design and manufacture of the subsea electronics modules (SEMs) and subsea control modules (SCMs) were carried out by Proserv’s team of subsea experts in Great Yarmouth, UK, with Proserv’s Trondheim facility in Norway providing technical support. Final testing, servicing and the integration of equipment was carried out at Proserv’s controls facility in Houston, USA.SolutionProserv provided their latest A2G technology with SIIS L2 Canbus instrumentation, dual IWIS DHPT interface, dual SEM, and 26 hydraulic function SCMs. Each SCM provided 5,000 and 15,000psi supplies for field valve control for diverless recovery, if necessary, in deep water. The Proserv ingenious design required no running tool and included full alignment, shock absorption, soft landing and secondary breakout on the SCM itself.BenefitsThe Proserv A2G dual subsea electronics provides unrivalled data speed and flexibility.
The full provision of the control system and in-house software offers a superior level of support and service not normally provided by a sub-contractor.
The ability of the system to be run without a dedicated running tool reduces CAPEX commitment and enables the flexibility of SCM support without the burden of tooling readiness or operation personnel.
SUBSEA BROWNFIELD UPGRADE CO-EXIST SOLUTIONBackgroundThe client required an extension of their existing subsea control system situated in a subsea tieback field in the UKCS (135 miles from the coast). Owing to obsolescence and limit of operational spares a threat to existing system maintenance and availability existed. Additionally future client opportunities for system extensions could not be realised due to the technology limitations of the current system.SolutionUsing our retrofit expertise and capabilities, Proserv provided a fully redundant co-exist solution which secured not only the production capability but also provided the opportunity to plug in for future field extension opportunities. To ensure minimal impact to the current operations Proserv worked closely with the client to implement a system that utilised existing power and assured the current communication network was maintained. To ensure fully compliant integration with the existing XT assemblies, Proserv’s subsea control modules and mounting interfaces were implemented. This approach provided future spares/maintenance capabilities for management and replacement of obsolete equipment during the remaining field life.ScopeThe scope included test and evaluation of the existing system including evaluation of umbilical characterisation. Integration into the system required the provision of Proserv’s Open Communications Hub (OCH), which provided power and communication distribution to the two Subsea Control Modules (SCM), also provided by Proserv. The OCH was equipped with a power/communication extension to support a production system on a future 12km step-out. The existing topology utilised separate communications and power which required the installation of the Proserv Topside Power and Communication Unit (TPCU) to integrate the Proserv communications onto the existing umbilical.ConclusionProserv successfully supplied a OCH providing the client with an extension of their existing subsea control system.BenefitsCost-effective solution using standard Proserv technology assuring reliable and field proven products.
Integration into the existing subsea system has minimal interface connections, reducing risk and impact on day to day operations.
Proserv products have extensive inbuilt configuration and diagnostic capabilities, providing enhanced performance compared to the clients existing system.Future extension capability is now in-built to enable the client to realise commercial and operational opportunities.
Risk of obsolescence during extended life of field has been mitigated.
System supports future integration of additional instrumentation that may benefit production optimisation or asset surveillance.
SCM RETROFIT DUE TO OEM OBSOLESCENCEBackgroundOur client had a requirement to refurbish older Aker 4G subsea control modules (SCM) that have obsolescence and fault issues, particularly with the internal subsea electronics module (SEM).
The original equipment manufacturer (OEM) was unable to support the system or deliver spare parts to support.SolutionProserv completed a full overhaul of the SCM and its components utlising our latest A2G SEM technology which is currently installed and coexisting with the OEM system until the client upgrades the balance of SCMs.Scope of workRefurbish the used Aker 4G SCM module by installing a Proserv A2G SEM with redundant power and communications.
Reuse all hydraulic parts and sensors, replace only if necessary and refurbish all existing equipment.
Interfacing to topside Siemens DCS by legacy MODBUS map.Benefits
Cost effective, since most SCM parts are durable and will now be reused.
Short lead time, Proserv delivered the SCM in 6 weeks.
High bandwidth and open topside interface.
Redundant power supply and communication.
Flexible system and market-leading SEM reliability.
POOR RELIABILITY OBSOLESCENCE SCM RETROFITBackgroundA remote unmanned platform in the North Sea supports two subsea production wells linked to a Host platform. The subsea control system is over 20 years old, is unsupported by the OEM and has suffered from repeated failures, unscheduled shutdowns, and limited remote support leading to a significant loss of production.SolutionProserv provided a retrofit solution using the existing Subsea Control Module (SCM) hydraulic and mechanical hardware but replacing the Subsea Electronic Module (SEM) for a more reliable and fully supported unit. This provided a replacement solution with the incumbent Subsea Control Modules (SCMs) and thus an upgrade path to improve availability and support and system capability.
ScopeA study was undertaken to consider the implications of SEM replacement within each SCM, including the use of existing inductive couplers which are inherent in the system. Each SCM was disassembled, pre tested, retrofitted and FAT tested with new Proserv electronics. The surface control system was also replaced with a new MCS to replace the OEM system and provide communications to the retrofit SCMs.BenefitsSignificantly less expensive than a replacement

Case StudiesSCM Recovery and Retrofit Campaign – Catcher Field
In response to hydraulic fluid leakage from a Subsea Control Module (SCM) in the Catcher Field, Proserv and Harbour Energy undertook a full-scale recovery and retrofit campaign.
Case Study:SCM Recovery and Retrofit Campaign Catcher FieldProject BackgroundIn 2023, a Dril-Quip Subsea Control Module (SCM) from the Catcher Field’s CI1 location was recovered following reports of a hydraulic fluid leak. The intervention confirmed that hydraulic fluid was leaking from the gas end valve assembly of one of the three low-pressure (LP) accumulators installed on the SCM.The faulty SCM was returned to Proserv’s Great Yarmouth facility for detailed inspection and root cause analysis.Findings
The gas end valve was fabricated from low-grade stainless steel (SS 304), which is not corrosion-resistant in subsea environments
The component was not connected to the SCM’s cathodic protection system, leaving it vulnerable to galvanic corrosion
Corrosion was confirmed as the likely failure mechanism
The associated accumulator bladder was also found to be damaged; however, it remains unclear whether this failure preceded or resulted from the gas end valve issue
Corrective Action PlanUpon identifying the issue, Harbour Energy initiated a campaign to recover and upgrade all 24 SCMs in the field. The key upgrades include:
Replacing the LP accumulator gas end valve assemblies with corrosion-resistant SS 316 components
Installing earth bonding to ensure future protection via cathodic protection
Refurbishing two SCMs (Unit 10 and 14) at Proserv’s Great Yarmouth facility to serve as operational spares
Scope of Work - Onshore (Proserv Great Yarmouth)
Development of new test procedures and engineering drawings
Load testing and replacement of affected components, including:
Gas end valve assemblies
LP accumulators
Filter assemblies
Removal of all calcifications from anodes to prevent system contamination
Cleaning of all accessible external stainless steel components
Assembly of upgraded SCM housing and completion of all required testing
Scope of Work - Offshore (Proserv Scope)
Removal of SCM side panels and top plates
Initial visual inspection of internals
Secondary wash down with panels removed
Detailed inspection and assessment of LP accumulator gas end valves
Pre-charge checks and top-up of LP / HP accumulators
Removal and replacement of affected gas end valve assemblies
SCM pre-deployment checks following retrofit
Results & Observations
12 out of 14 SCMs (86%) recovered exhibited significant corrosion of the LP accumulator pre-charge components
SCM 18 (BP3) was quarantined after an unsuccessful recovery attempt by vessel contractor, where it fell to the seabed. It was replaced offshore by SCM 10
SCM 22 was recovered and found to have a pre-fitted earth strap. Dril-Quip confirmed that SCMs 22 and 20 had previously been upgraded to the latest revision
SCM 11 was upgraded onshore at Proserv to the latest specification
SCM 19 (CP4) was successfully retrieved and returned onshore for rework. It was replaced offshore by SCM 14
ConclusionThe campaign has effectively identified and mitigated a systemic corrosion risk to subsea infrastructure caused by suboptimal material selection and insufficient cathodic protection. The proactive retrofit program significantly enhances system integrity and operational reliability across the Catcher field.

The world’s first commercial floating offshore wind farmLocated off the coast of Peterhead, Aberdeenshire in north-east Scotland, Hywind Scotland is the world’s first commercial floating offshore wind farm. Since the wind farm began production in October 2017, Equinor has revealed that Hywind Scotland has achieved the highest average capacity factor of all wind farms.Real-time data processing and predictive analytics modellingProserv ECG™ not only employs distributed temperature sensing (DTS) and distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) but engages Synaptec’s unique distributed electromechanical sensors (DES), via its passive electrical and mechanical sensor systems. The hardware will be complemented by Proserv’s innovative HMI design philosophy, utilising Proserv’s TIACS software suite.During ECG’s demonstration on Hywind Scotland, Proserv will deliver advanced real-time data processing and predictive analytics modelling. This will be achieved with vital support from technology partner and specialists in subsea power cable engineering and management, BPP Cable Solutions. The system’s specialist predictive data analysis tools will use known cable power transmission performance physics to monitor cable arrays continuously and autonomously. This will provide assurance of cable health and identify in advance any anomalies and potential longer-term faults that can be dealt with on a proactive basis. This approach represents a major shift from traditional reactive cable performance monitoring, whereby a cable fault or failure identification using stored data only occurs after an event takes place through retrospective root cause analysis.Monitoring the condition and performance of cable terminationsCritically, ECG can monitor the condition, integrity, and performance of cable terminations, an aspect needing development in the offshore wind sector. Cable terminations are well-known for being a serious failure point and so this technology solution will scrutinise this specific key area of an asset, not possible with traditional cable monitoring systems.

‘The use of the Mini-Separator System… enhances safety, saves time and improves on current market products’
Case Study:Topside Sampling
The Challenge
Simplifying the process of sampling water, oil, gas and solids – and reducing risks to people, the environment and offshore assets.
The established methods for sampling on assets pose several issues, ranging from the potential release of gas to the deployment of multiple containers, and the need for operators to use breathing apparatus.
The Response
A team of technical specialists at Proserv developed the Mini-Separator system as a new sampling solution which addresses these operational issues.Built to meet NACE standards, the system is designed to separate fluids and capture sand/solids as well as sample oil, water and gas.It can also ‘see’ the liquid split with its Guided Wave Radar (GWR) level device. This prevents the need for time-consuming lab work, separating out fluids and equipment cleaning processes.
The GWR is the centre-piece innovation of the system, applying advanced technology to elevate performance in this specialist area. The Result
The use of the Mini-Separator system, instead of an atmospheric container, for sampling at risers and wellheads, enhances safety, saves time and improves on current market products.
Its benefits include:
a reduction in exposure to toxic gases
less requirement for isolation of gas heads
time savings in the sampling of slugging wells or wells with high gas/oil ratio
less manual handling when taking larger volumes of liquids for more representative sand sampling

Metering system upgrade and expansionBackgroundProserv recently completed the live upgrade of a metering system’s hardware and software for one of the UK’s highest producing fields. The client came to us with a requirement to upgrade the existing system to remove obsolescence issues, as well as expand the system to include additional wells – all while ensuring that no loss of production occurred. No loss of production
Loss of production during an operation like this can represent a significant loss of revenue for the end client, as without live installation the wells would have needed to have been shut down numerous times over a 13 week period. A live installation was therefore necessary. We developed a temporary, but fully functioning replica system to allow the cabinet equipment to be changed out with no downtime.
The live installation also brought additional benefits. Bed space is limited on the asset, so performing the upgrade and expansion without the need for a planned shutdown provided more flexibility, as the client could schedule us in for the upgrade at a time best suited to them.Chosen for our expertiseProserv has a long history with both the client and the asset. The client felt that our knowledge of the then-current system, along with the level of support that we’d been providing to the obsolete system thus far, gave us the edge.
We also provided a number of potential solutions for the end user. We didn’t box them into a standard package, forcing them to take what we wanted to supply. This gave them the flexibility to choose the technologies that they wanted and needed.
A key feature of our win was that we were able to integrate the new subsea wells into the existing system. This future proofed their equipment and removed the need for a separate system, which would have inevitably added both cost and complexity.Overcoming challenges
The implementation scope consisted of three phases: setup and transfer signals to temporary rack, refit existing cabinets and transfer signals to the new equipment. This might sound simple but in order to get there, we needed to create a 1,400 page Installation and Commissioning Procedure (ICP), which contained 700 pages of associated drawings – no mean feat in of itself!
Multiphase metering system for subsea wells BackgroundThe project involves the implementation of a new metering system for a tie back of 8 subsea wells to an existing installation, with the potential capacity for up to 18 wells. This system, integrated with a Pressure Volume Temperature (PVT) model and Virtual Flow Computer, was deployed in one of the largest fields in the Norwegian Continental Shelf.ScopeProserv's solution entailed developing a cyber secure metering system installed on a single Virtual Machine, eliminating the need for physical equipment installation. The system offers remote access capabilities, requiring minimal physical maintenance, which proved advantageous to the client.SolutionProserv's expertise facilitated the creation of a cutting-edge metering system with advanced features such as secure remote access, integration of a PVT model into the supervisory system, and utilization of modern communications protocols like OPC UA. The entire system operates on a Virtual Machine, aligning with the client's cyber security standards and ensuring efficiency.BenefitsTechnology:
Secure remote access ensures convenient and secure system management.
Integration of OPC UA interface enhances communication security.

INTERVENTION WORKOVER CONTROLS:
KESSOG PROJECTProject Background
Proserv’s control systems have become increasingly complex over time, driven by the need to meet new regulatory requirements from both a safety and environmental perspective.
Early equipment utilised simple direct hydraulic systems, operated from manual hydraulic control valves located on a small control panel supplied from the rig system. These systems have now been developed into the integrated workover control systems (IWOCS) we see operating in the North Sea continental shelf. These utilise fail-safe pilot hydraulic systems and, in some cases, are provided with remote-operated panels and multi-level sequenced shutdown systems.
Solution
Proserv was contracted by TOTAL E&P Ltd to provide an integrated workover control system (IWOCS) capable of operating on a high pressure/high temperature wellhead, while providing electro-hydraulic controls capable of interfacing with a third-party master control station. Right from the beginning of the project, Proserv was faced with four key challenges associated with the Kessog field:
High pressure - wellhead application (12,500 psi)
High temperature - wellhead application (125 degrees C)
Christmas tree deployment via diving support vessel (DSV)
Well completion from Sedco 714 drilling rig
By adopting a one-Proserv approach and evaluating the project specifics based upon their own individual specifications, Proserv was able to have all associated equipment designed and manufactured. A pre-mobilisation system integrity test (SIT) was also carried out to ensure safety, quality, and operational parameters were met within the specified timeframe assigned by TOTAL.
Scope
The system requirements for this particular workover consisted of one hydraulic power unit (HP & LP functions), a 14-core umbilical reel, umbilical deployment basket, and hydraulic cutter.
Conclusion
Proserv was able to deliver the project on time through a fast-track system. With focused project management along with dedicated team technicians, the entire operation was carried out effectively throughout. In-depth analysis was available during the project through a variety of briefs, de-briefs, toolbox talks, etc. By performing successfully on this project, Proserv was able to gain further experience in the field as well as strengthen their relationship with TOTAL E&P.
The Benefits
Compact design of the IWOCS keeps equipment footprint to a minimum, which is essential on a crowded drill floor.
Air-operated pumps within the HPU eliminated the risks of an electrical system and kept the IWOCS within the applicable zone rating.
High pressure and high temperature design of the umbilicals were made specific to the project requirements, ensuring efficiency when controlling the well.
