Our client was awarded a five-year contract to provide Petrobras with drill pipe riser (DPR) control systems for deepwater pre-salt fields. These control systems were to operate as an intervention workover control system (IWOCS) for deepwater operations in Brazil. As well as supporting the control of all the subsea operations, including emergency disconnect, well control, tree and downhole smart functions, the system needed to provide control for the tubing hanger running tools and surface test trees.
The client was therefore looking for a high function, highly technical, bespoke system that required significant engineering competence and collaboration to effectively develop, all while ensuring the highest standards in reliability and quality, given the critical safety operations it needed to perform.
The bespoke aspects of the DPR system ruled out an OEM solution and, because a DPR is such a safety critical system, our client needed to engage an established, industry-recognised controls expert. Based on our previous track record with the client, combined with our market leading capabilities in the subsea field, Proserv was awarded the contract to supply nine control systems for the DPR project.
Solution
The DPR systems were run as a rental unit with the client supplying operations and maintenance personnel. As part of the work scope, Proserv was responsible for supporting these project personnel by providing on-site assistance and technical expertise.
The use of a DPR system enables installation and workover on vertical trees in open water without the use of a drilling riser. Annulus services were provided by a 1.5" 10k high collapse resistant core within the umbilical.
Overall project execution, along with engineering and build of the control systems was carried out at Proserv’s subsea controls centre of excellence in Great Yarmouth, with the accompanying hydraulic power units (HPUs) delivered from our manufacturing facility in Malaysia.

Scope
Each of the nine control systems consisted of a surface HPU and control cabin for operation in a Zone 1 hazardous area. The surface control unit within the control cabin interfaced with a drill floor operator screen, emergency shut-down (ESD) panel and the HPU.
The Proserv DPR subsea control module (SCM) operated up to 40 functions on the subsea tree stack up at three separate pressure levels supplied from the umbilical. An automatic disconnect valve and shut-down functionality ensured safe disconnection should the floating drilling unit lose position or the umbilical become severed. Proserv’s specialist dual electronics within the SCM provided redundancy and, with an ROV recoverable SCM, the system was optimised for workover up-time.

The Magnus platform is located approximately 160km Northeast of the Shetland Islands and receives production from the Magnus oil field.
This is then exported via the Ninians Pipeline to the Sullom Voe Terminal in the Shetland Islands. The platform also receives dry gas production from the Sullom Voe Terminal, which is commingled with the export gas from the platform and re-exported into the North Leg Gas Pipeline.

Our client required a new metering control system on board a floating storage unit (FSU). The FSU is undergoing a major overhaul to extend the life of the asset to 2040. They needed a new system that would help to bring the asset up to modern standards and help to reduce maintenance and manual intervention.

This flexibility proved crucial, as the project scope eventually expanded to include an additional flow computer. As a result, we had to redesign the metering system’s control panel after the equipment had already been delivered to site. Rather than pulling the equipment back to our measurement center of excellence in Cumbernauld, Scotland, which would have significantly extended the project and added cost, we designed the modifications remotely. The team then reworked the panel and relocated some of the HMI equipment to an area adjacent to the panel on site, all while the vessel was still docked.
Strengthening relationships
We executed part of the system installation and commissioning during the COVID-19 pandemic, without incident. The factory acceptance testing in Norway was far shorter than any of the client and regulator attendees had anticipated, due to its smooth execution and the low number of faults uncovered.
This project further strengthened our relationship with the client and proves again that we can provide an alternative to some of the OEM’s metering control systems.

This system allows flow meters at various sites around the Rumaila oil field in Iraq to be calibrated without having to be taken to a dedicated facility.
As the system is used at different sites, it had to be designed for use with different sizes of meters, different reference conditions and report in both metric and US customary units.

SCM RecoveryProject Background
In 2023, a Dril-Quip Subsea Control Module (SCM) from the Catcher Field’s CI1 location was recovered following reports of a hydraulic fluid leak. The intervention confirmed that hydraulic fluid was leaking from the gas end valve assembly of one of the three low-pressure (LP) accumulators installed on the SCM.
The faulty SCM was returned to Proserv’s Great Yarmouth facility for detailed inspection and root cause analysis.
Findings
The gas end valve was fabricated from low-grade stainless steel (SS 304), which is not corrosion-resistant in subsea environments
The component was not connected to the SCM’s cathodic protection system, leaving it vulnerable to galvanic corrosion
Corrosion was confirmed as the likely failure mechanism
The associated accumulator bladder was also found to be damaged; however, it remains unclear whether this failure preceded or resulted from the gas end valve issue
Corrective Action Plan
Upon identifying the issue, Harbour Energy initiated a campaign to recover and upgrade all 24 SCMs in the field. The key upgrades include:
Replacing the LP accumulator gas end valve assemblies with corrosion-resistant SS 316 components
Installing earth bonding to ensure future protection via cathodic protection
Refurbishing two SCMs (Unit 10 and 14) at Proserv’s Great Yarmouth facility to serve as operational spares

Load testing and replacement of affected components, including:

SCM 18 (BP3) was quarantined after an unsuccessful recovery attempt by vessel contractor, where it fell to the seabed. It was replaced offshore by SCM 10
SCM 22 was recovered and found to have a pre-fitted earth strap. Dril-Quip confirmed that SCMs 22 and 20 had previously been upgraded to the latest revision
SCM 11 was upgraded onshore at Proserv to the latest specification
SCM 19 (CP4) was successfully retrieved and returned onshore for rework. It was replaced offshore by SCM 14
Conclusion
The campaign has effectively identified and mitigated a systemic corrosion risk to subsea infrastructure caused by suboptimal material selection and insufficient cathodic protection. The proactive retrofit program significantly enhances system integrity and operational reliability across the Catcher field.
